What Really Happens After You Submit a Grant Application?
Grant writing is a long process—crafting the perfect proposal, gathering data, and making your case. But once you submit, what happens next?
After nearly 20 years in fundraising, I’ve seen firsthand how funding decisions are made. Many nonprofits assume a well-written application is enough, but funders look at so much more.
Here’s what truly matters in a grant application:
🔹 Alignment with Funding Priorities – If your project doesn’t fit what the funder wants to support, it won’t move forward. Even the best-written proposals get declined if they don’t align.
🔹 Impact & Measurable Outcomes – Funders need to see clear, quantifiable results. How many people will benefit? What’s the expected long-term impact? Data strengthens your case.
🔹 Financial Stewardship – Can they trust your organization to use the funds as promised? Funders look for proof that you’ll be a responsible steward of their investment. Transparency, strong financial management, and accountability matter.
🔹 Relationships & Trust – A strong reputation and community connections can make a difference. Funders want to invest in organizations they believe in.
🔹 Clarity & Completeness – Missing details, vague descriptions, or an unclear budget? If reviewers have to guess, they’ll likely move on. Every detail matters.
🔹 Standing Out from Similar Applications – When multiple organizations apply for similar projects, funders look for what makes yours unique. What sets you apart?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned? Never rely on a single funding source. I’ve seen organizations lose long-term funding overnight due to shifting priorities. A strong, diversified fund development strategy is key to sustainability.
